ADHD Assessments

What is ADHD?

ADHD—Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder—is a neurodevelopmental condition. It can influence a young person's behaviour, attention, and how they interact with the world. ADHD is not a mental health disorder or a learning disability, though individuals with ADHD may also experience challenges like anxiety.

Children with ADHD often find executive functioning tasks—such as planning, organising, and prioritising—particularly difficult. This can impact their ability to concentrate, regulate activity levels, and manage impulses in everyday life and at school.

ADHD symptoms typically fall into three categories:

  • Inattentiveness:  such as, a difficulty focusing, staying on task and organisation

  • Hyperactivity and Impulsivity: such, as excessive movement or acting without thinking

  • Combined Presentation: A mix of both inattentive and hyperactive traits

Our Assessment Approach

At White Oaks, we follow NICE guidelines and use a multi-disciplinary team to deliver thorough, evidence-based ADHD assessments. Our process is designed to provide a deep understanding of your child’s strengths and challenges—whether or not a diagnosis is made.

Led by experienced clinicians, our staged approach ensures that families only proceed with full assessment if initial screening suggests ADHD may be present.

Step-by-Step Assessment Process

1. Pre-Assessment

  • Initial Phone Consultation

  • Booking & Forms: You’ll receive a welcome pack including a pre-assessment form and requests for any existing reports

  • Screening Questionnaires: We send Conners 4 forms to you and your child’s school

  • A parent and child consultation

  • A collaborative decision about the most suitable assessment pathway

2. Full ADHD Assessment

  • QB Check: A computer-based attention and impulse control test

  • DIVA Interviews: Structured conversations with parents and child, led by an assistant psychologist or clinical nurse specialist

  • School Observation: Conducted by our team to understand your child’s behaviour in their learning environment

  • Cognitive Testing (WISC-V): A detailed cognitive profile conducted by an experienced clinical psychologist

  • Detailed Developmental History: A collaborative session to discuss findings and next steps

3. Report

  • You’ll receive a comprehensive report, whether or not a diagnosis is made. It will include tailored recommendations to support your child’s development.

Ongoing Support

We’re here for you beyond the assessment. After reviewing the report, we’ll answer any questions and discuss options for therapy or onward referrals. If medication is being considered, we can give advice on NHS and private referral routes.
