ADHD Medication & Transferring Prescriptions to the NHS
Starting ADHD Medication
If your child has received an ADHD diagnosis and you're considering medication, the first step is to meet with a qualified medical professional who can guide you through the options.
This may be a:
-
Community Paediatrician
-
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
-
GP with a special interest in ADHD
They’ll help to consider whether your child is suitable for treatment and do all the relevant medical checks.
Transferring Private Prescriptions to the NHS
If your child has started ADHD medication privately, you may wish to transfer prescribing to the NHS. This can be done through a shared care agreement between your GP and a specialist. However, not all GPs are able or willing to enter into shared care protocols.
If your GP declines, the next step is to request a referral to your local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) ADHD medication route. Ask your GP to refer, making sure to clearly state that your child already has a formal diagnosis
Please note: CAMHS waiting times apply, and referrals following private treatment are not prioritised. While waiting, you would need to continue to pay privately for your child’s ADHD medication.
What You’ll Need
To support the transfer process, your GP may request documentation from your child’s assessment. At White Oaks, our assessments follow NICE guidelines and include all necessary clinical detail. No further diagnostic assessment is required—and repeating one would be considered unethical.
We’re happy to liaise with your GP and provide any additional information they need to support a smooth transition.
